The Summer Camp Where Mahki Got Saved
This month, we have a goal of sending 15 students from our block to Inspire Sports Camp — an unforgettable overnight experience where these young students from our Homework Club and One Way Youth Group encounter joy, belonging, adventure, and the love of Jesus!
Inspire Sports Camps has the tremendous vision of “transforming cities one camper at a time” and is a gospel-focused summer sleep-away sports camp experience for young people from inner-cities across the Northeast.
Their goal is to provide an underserved population of campers with a fun filled week of activities, all while advancing the Gospel.
For 15-year-old Mahki, Inspire Sports Camp has become a place that changed his life. He’s attended camp four times and can’t wait to return for the fifth time. We asked him to tell us a little bit about his experience at Camp.
“When you first roll up to Inspire Sports Camp, there are tons of leaders outside with loud music and pool noodles welcoming you into a huge gym,” Mahki shared. “You meet your counselors, do rock climbing and zip lines, and hear about the Gospel. That’s just day one.”
He told us that each morning begins with flag raising and chants before campers choose activities like basketball or soccer. Afternoons are filled with hiking, swimming, fishing, tubing, and “the blob” — a giant inflatable launcher on the pond that sends kids flying sky-high above the water 👀
Evenings culminate around worship, a speaker, and cabin conversations that can become the most meaningful part of the week.
“This camp has played a major part in my spiritual awakening to Jesus Christ,” Mahki said. “Three years ago at Camp, I rang the bell at camp after giving my life to Jesus. Everyone was clapping and making noise. And I’ve grown a lot since then. Now I always carry my Bible and my notepad with me wherever I go.”
Mahki first got involved with Greenhouse Project through Homework Club years ago. Today, he’s an active part of One Way Youth Group.
“I’m really looking forward to going back to camp this year. There are always more opportunities there to meet new people. And when you’re away with people, you can see who they really are, so I’ve gotten to know my neighbors and One Way peers better.”
Inspire Sports Camp brings together students from Chester alongside other city kids from places like the Bronx, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. While the zip lines, kayaking, climbing walls, and sports are unforgettable, what impacts students most are the relationships.
Mahki told us that “the leaders at Inspire Sports Camp care for us a lot. They are always there for us. They are very understanding and welcoming. You can talk to them about anything.”
The counselors walk closely with campers all week long — answering questions about God, encouraging them, listening to them, and modeling what faith looks like in everyday life.
For many students, camp becomes a reset — a safe, joy-filled place where they can breathe deeply, reconnect with God, and imagine a bigger future for themselves.
Mahki’s Special Message to Students
“If you’re a student on the fence about attending Inspire Sports Camp, you should come because it’s a great opportunity to meet God and confess your sins and have a better life. You’ll meet new people who influence you in the Gospel and it will just be a great time.”
And this is why we keep going back — we can’t wait for Camp!
