FAQ
We know many groups are visiting this neighborhood for the first time. Take a look at these common questions to be informed and prepared before you arrive!
-
Many of our volunteers are visiting this part of the city for the first time, and the headlines or reputation of the neighborhood can create some hesitation. The reality? This community is filled with families, kids, neighbors, and local leaders who deeply care about this block and the people living here.
While there are behaviors outside our control, rest assured you will be serving alongside our seasoned staff, during organized times, and in close relationship with residents we know and trust.
Our volunteers consistently leave saying, “This felt nothing like what I expected.” We don’t ignore the challenges here — but we also don’t define this neighborhood by them.
-
Our headquarters is easy to find via GPS — it sits on the corner of the block with a nice Greenhouse Project sign hanging from the building.
We encourage use of free street parking along 23rd Street and adjacent Crosby Street. There are typically plenty of open spaces. We can help larger groups coordinate carpooling if needed.
Once your visit is scheduled, we’ll connect you with a direct contact person for the day you serve. Our team will also greet your group when you arrive so no one feels lost or unsure about where to go.
-
Depending on what you signed up for and the current needs of the community, most groups help with outreach-oriented events or projects.
Our team will guide you or your group with some background knowledge, tips for tasks you are helping with, and prayer.
Some teams enjoy hands-on projects, while others connect more through conversation, encouragement, and presence. You do not need special skills or prior experience — just a willingness to serve and build relationships.
-
Absolutely. Some churches begin with a single Saturday serve day or by joining us in prayer. Others partner on community events or send one micro group at a time before expanding involvement.
We believe long-term relationships grow naturally, not through pressure. Our hope is simply to create opportunities for your church to serve faithfully and see what God may build from there.
-
This matters deeply to us. We are not interested in “saving” a neighborhood or treating people like projects. We believe real impact starts with listening, consistency, humility, and relationships.
We encourage every group to come ready to learn from the community, not just serve in it. The most meaningful partnerships happen when people slow down, build trust, and show up consistently over time. We see this work as serving alongside neighbors — not above them.
